Personal security is no joke. Especially for an international superstar, you never know when a situation is going to escalate into a dangerous conflict. That’s why it was so important for a star like Ed Sheeran that he hire the best protection.

So in 2015, when Sheeran was in the market for a new bodyguard, he thought he was simply adding a new employee to his team. However, this fresh face quickly revealed that he had far grander plans than providing muscle for the pop star.

Flying high with a slew of hit albums, a burgeoning acting career, and an instantly recognizable face, Ed Sheeran is one of the biggest stars in the world. He can barely go anywhere without being mobbed by fans.

That’s not too shabby for a former music nerd who used to be bullied for his red hair and stutter. But even as Ed continued to break new ground, he found that fame did have its price.

Because everybody wanted a piece of Ed, he realized he needed a little protection from the adoring masses. Naturally, a fun-loving chap like him didn’t want a mindless, meatheaded bodyguard. The singer went in a different direction.

That’s why Sheeran brought on Kevin Myers. The barrel-chested bloke never left Ed’s side, which discouraged any over-excited onlookers from taking a run at him. Still, Kevin could do a lot more than just look tough.

Kev started out in the security game many years before, so he had long been accustomed to the rigors and routines of the touring lifestyle. Behind the scenes, one of his big responsibilities was to be an entertaining presence for his overworked clients.

Not long ago, he took on the huge task of guarding Irish boy band The Wanted. A seasoned pro like Kevin had no problem wrangling up five band members, so he figured being the right-hand man to one pop star would be a breeze.

Kevin took on Ed as his sole client in 2015, and it’s safe to say that the two of them quickly became…attached. Spending so much time together, they couldn’t help but bond. And Ed soon discovered Kev’s favorite pastime.

He positively loved making fun of his boss. The polar opposite of a yes-man, Kevin constantly cracked jokes, and at times, even sported a red wig that mimicked Ed’s signature hairdo. As the two guys snapped a ton of funny photos, they had an interesting thought.

Ed encouraged Kev to start his own Instagram account. The bodyguard did just that, but made sure to add his own irreverent touch. On his profile, he summed up his job as a “Triple A rated protective security officer for a hobbit. Call me Aragorn.”

That account evolved into a hilarious story of their friendship, and Sheeran fans soon took notice. It showed a side of life on the road that most people never knew existed. Of course, the bulk of Kev’s photos were various insults and practical jokes.

For example, Kev often showed him and his client fighting over snacks or disagreeing about pre-concert activities. Apparently not a fan of museums, Kev complained, “This is after one hour of bae taking me to an art gallery.” But Ed wasn’t afraid to strike back.

Unwilling to let the art and hobbit jabs go unchecked, Ed came up with sidesplitting photo ops of his own. He made a big impression with a shot of him smelling his security officer’s armpit. Kev quipped that the singer was enjoying his personal scent, “Sweaty Summer.”

Kev built a large enough following that other celebrities actually looked forward to meeting him. Ed didn’t mind his bodyguard getting a moment in the spotlight. In fact, he devised a plan to make him even bigger.

The “Shape of You” singer called for more fans to follow Kev’s account and make him famous. The ploy worked. His bodyguard soon had more notifications than he could handle, and his follower count shot past one million!

After years of protecting the rich and famous, Kevin finally achieved celebrity of his own. As he grew in popularity, some fans couldn’t help but wonder if he’d move on from being Ed’s assistant. One Instagram post seemed to confirm their worst fears.

In late 2018, Kev shared a photo of him and Shawn Mendes. He turned heads with the announcement that he would be leaving Ed’s side since Shawn generously offered him five dollars more per day.

Naturally, Kev was just being sarcastic. He would never abandon his “bae,” though he could also never resist the chance to take a little dig at Ed. Ultimately, their barrage of jokes proves just how close they are.

In the high-stress world of entertainment, Ed needs somebody like Kev to lean on when times get tough. At the same time, “Security Kev” gets more than his fair share of perks hanging out with Ed.

For instance, Kevin gets primetime seats at every Ed Sheeran concert. That is a huge benefit in its own right, but Kevin gets paid to attend on top of that! And some of his photos show that he may be more than just a fan of music.

Could we be seeing an official Sheeran-Myers collaboration in the near future? It would be unlikely to top the charts, but fans would certainly appreciate hearing these pals jam together. Of course, some celebrity-assistant duos have gotten ever closer than these two.
